Today we did a taste testing experiment! Devin is doing a unit study on on how your body grows and changes. This experiment was part of his assignments this week. We invited Hannah to join in on the fun! Our first experiment was dissolving salt and cocoa into a glass of water. We then were to strain it into another glass. The cocoa was suppose to stay in the funnel and the salty water was suppose to end up in the glass. The kids then tasted it and it was suppose to taste salty with very little hint of cocoa. Well, that is not exactly what happened! Some of the cocoa color and taste made it through the paper towel funnel. Oh well! It was fun to try and it definitely tasted salty!
Our next experiment was just a food tasting! We took a look at our taste buds in a mirror and then we sampled a few sugar crystals! Yummy sweetness! We then dried off our tongues and tried some more sugar crystals. We discovered that if you place sugar on the back of your dry tongue, it takes a few seconds before your tongue gets wet enough to move the sugar to the front of your tongue, where the more sensitive taste buds are located, to taste the sweetness! We also sampled lemon juice, honey, cocoa, salt, green salsa and ice cubes! The ice cubes were necessary after the green salsa! :) What a fun afternoon learning about our taste buds!
